Sadie McMullen Is Sane
Buffalo, Aug, 19 - Sadie McMullen, the Akron (N.Y.) murderess, (No wonder why she went into hiding, why the title) has been released from the Buffalo State Hospital. (Not sure what book said that Sadie committed suicide, but the Author should reread that last sentence.) About 9 o'clock on the night of Nov. 1, 1890 (It was on October 31st, 1890) she threw Ella May Conners, aged eleven, and Delia Brown, aged sex, from the New-York Central trestle bridge which spans Murder Creek, in Akron, down to the ground, seventy feet below. Ella Connors was instantly killed and Delia Brown was permanently injured. Then the murderess attempted suicide by drowning, but was rescued. Miss McMullen was indicted and arraigned on the charge of murder, the trial opening on the morning of March 5, 1891, and lasting until the night of the 7th, when the jury returned a verdict of acquittal on the grounds of insanity. Superintendent Andrews says that she is now perfectly sane.
After researching the complex, and finding a few cases where patients families sued the hospital, I'm really wondering if her death may have been covered up. She was close with her Aunt, and yet no one can find either one of them. This is the last known place where she lived. Once August 19th came and went, she was lost to the wind. Something doesn't sit right about this. Yes, she killed someone, but her family should at least know where she is.

Sadie was my Great Great Great Aunt.
ReplyDeleteMy Cousin has done extensive research on her to no avail. Sadly what became of her will probably always be a mystery.
